Rooms With A View
This is a blog from Samantha Bayley who will be covering the Spanish Costas around Costa Del Sol for HPKUK.
Everything’s better with an ocean view and this was certainly true on one of my recent jobs. Delighted to have been commissioned to work for Paula Monaghan Interiors – www.paulamonaghan.com.- in a beautiful Villa less than a kilometer from the beach at La Cala De Mijas with the prettiest view of El Chaparral Golf course and a virtually uninterrupted view of the sea. This fabulous house has 8 bedrooms and bathrooms, large swimming pool and mature garden and was originally built and fitted throughout to a very high standard. All the furniture in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms is solid oak and custom built to fit each room which the owners felt was worth keeping. The whole house has been modernized, re-floored, re-wired, new air-conditioning and the swimming pool rebuilt. Every trade has been onsite and it was my job to refurbish the furniture in the bedrooms and bathrooms and to paint the kitchen cabinets.
The aim throughout the project was to ‘lighten and brighten’ by painting the bedroom furniture in all the bedrooms and ensuites in a flat matt waterbased eggshell colour-matched to Farrow & Ball ‘Slipper Satin’, a classic ‘neutral’ which won’t date. Kitchen cabinet painter Mijas Marbella Spain
On such a large project I had help to clean the furniture down first before sanding. Handles, locks etc were removed and labelled and stored in the wardrobes for safekeeping.
I used a good adhesion primer to cover the ‘brown’ of the Oak. Two coats of tinted primer were applied, sanding lightly in between. During this process I put the primer coats on with a roller and laid off with a brush as my brief was that the furniture had to be hand painted, the two top coats were painted completely by hand. Butt hinges and in-frame doors hold no secrets!
As part of the modernization all the interior door handles were replaced with stainless steel and I suggested spraying the wardrobe handles to match, several light coats with a good quality spray worked perfectly and saved money! The butt hinges I simply cleaned and used a sanding block to buff up to match.
Over the course of this job mirrors, a bunkbed and a couple of shelves here and there were added on! Kitchen cabinet painter Mijas Marbella Spain
The kitchen was completely dismantled. Two walls were taken down and a breakfast bar created between the kitchen and lounge. Once rebuilt I went in and painted the carcasses ready for the doors which were completed in my workshop. These were once again painted to match Farrow and Ball ‘Light Blue’ in a matt water based eggshell. The doors required a lot more filling and repair work before they could be painted. I used 2 part filler to completely mask the old handle holes.

With the addition of white Silestone tops the ‘Light Blue’ kitchen looked fabulous when finished. The grey, silver, green blue changes with the light throughout the day.
I’m delighted to be starting another kitchen for Paula Monaghan Interiors on November 6.
